A.H.A.V.A. is a non-profit organization, currently operating out of Mitzpeh Yericho. We organize supplementary school programs to teach English to elementary school aged children from five different communities in the peripheral area outside Jerusalem.
Our goal is to provide effective English language instruction in Israel at a cost affordable to all socio-economic levels. This goal is achieved via properly trained (and paid) teachers working in small groups, with interesting and effective educational materials.
We believe that the most efficient form of language acquisition is the natural, non-frontal manner in which a mother tongue is learned. If exposed early and often enough, many children in this country can learn to speak and understand English at a very high level - as in other countries, where English is learned as a second language.
We have several projects that we work on.
READATHON For 5 weeks each year A.H.A.V.A. runs a Readathon. All students in Grades One and up may participate. With the approval of the municipality and the Ministry of Education, we go into 18 local Elementary and Jr. High schools to invite students to participate.
TEACHER TRAINING SEMINAR - A 16 hour professional development course is offered in short, affordable three day sessions in the summer. We offer training in our unique system and curriculum.
The teachers learn these techniques in much the same way that the children will, through games, practice sessions and repetition, so that they have a better understanding of this style. This approach is very different than the standard frontal teaching method used currently in the school system. Therefore, the teachers need to be retrained to think in - and use - this particular approach.
